Sending Files (and Large Files) More Securely with File Storage

You can use Smartermail File Storage to send files larger than email permits or more securely than normal email.

File Storage allows you to upload a file and then send a link (rather like Dropbox). You send that link to the recipient and they click the link to download the file. The file can have a password and you can also set the link to expire so it's only accessible for a limited time.

This isn't 100% secure if you send the link and the password both through email, but it's far more secure than a normal email.

Upload the File

The file upload has to be done through Smartermail  - then you can get a link and send it like a normal email.

  • Go to https://wm.gds.us
  • Login with your email address and password.  (Do you know your password?)
  • Go to the More menu at the top.
  • Click File Storage

  • Click Upload
  • Browse to locate the file on your computer and then wait for the upload to complete.

  • Once the file Uploads, click the name of the file. (not the three dots)

  • In the Stored File Dialog, toggle the Enable Public Access
  • Choose an expiration date (hours, days, weeks, or months)
  • Create a Password (make note of it as you’ll need to provide that with the link)
  • Copy the public download link.
  • Save

Now go back to your email (either Smartermail or Outlook) and send the link and the password. If you want to be more secure, send the link by email and send the password by some other means (text or phone would be to possibilities.)
