What's Involved in Transferring Your Domain Name
Transferring your Domain Name TO Chroma
To transfer your domain name to us, we'll need and authorization code and cooperation from the registered email address. The entire domain name process is run through email and the "email address or record" on the domain name is the "owner" of the domain name and must provide verification to allow the transfer.
Transferring a domain name costs (at most companies) the equivalent of 1 year renewal. It also adds 1 year to the expiration date of the domain name.
Here's a brief explanation of the process.
Get us Access to Your Current Domain Name
The easiest way is to give us access to your domain name and we'll do all the work.
- We can send you a secure email to provide a user name and password. Quite often we'll also need a code from your Two Factor Authentication to access the information.
- We usually also need the "email address of record" to forward us information.
- If the "email address of record" is inaccessible, then we have to change it and wait 60 days to complete the transfer.
- If you are using GoDaddy, they provide "Delegate Access" where you can assign a different user access to your account. (This lets us use our account and our Two Factor Authentication so that we don't need your help to access the account.)
- GoDaddy shows you how to do this here: https://www.godaddy.com/en-uk/help/invite-a-delegate-to-access-my-godaddy-account-12376
- The name on Chroma's account is "Jane Noel"
- The email address is "jane@chroma-marketing.com"
- Choose the Access Level "Products, Domain, & Purchase"
Overview of the Process
- We recreate the DNS records in a 3rd Party System like Cloudflare. DNS records are the "pointers" that tell the world where to find your website and email. We move them to a 3rd party system to ensure that the records remain stable when moved from one domain registrar to another.
- We request the authentication code. Often those are emailed to the "email address of record" and that recipient will need to forward us that information.
- We go to Enom (our Domain Registrar) and create an account for you at Enom Central.
- We will ask you for a credit card for that account. You can securely enter it here: https://fs27.formsite.com/cmeweb/form2/index.html
- NOTE: Even if we already have your credit card in our billing system, we'll need you to enter in here or in enom. Once it's in our system, we cannot see the complete information. We do not store customer credit card data.
- We login to your account and trigger the transfer.
- The "email address of record" will receive an email asking them to verify the transfer.
- Once verified, we wait for the transfer to completely. (It can take anywhere from a few hours to a week.)
- Once completed, we move the DNS to Enom Central.
- We make sure you have the information to login to your account at Enom Central in case you or your IT Department needs access to your DNS.
Transferring your Domain Name FROM Chroma
To transfer your name away from Chroma, you'll need to reset your password so you can give access to your new web developer or IT company.
Once you have access, you can login to your account and find the domain name:
- Go to General Settings
- Disable the Registrar Lock
- Click the Email Auth Info to Registrant link. (You can check the email address by going to contact info.)
NOTE: If you change the email address you must wait 60 Days before transferring. - Once the registrant email receives the auth code, give that to your new web developer.
- The registrant email will receive a verification email. Click the link to verify.
- Wait until the process completes, approximately 1 week.
